In most networks, a distributed control plane cannot effectively track network-wide resource allocation, making it impossible to guarantee QoS to flows that have performance requirements. A better solution is needed to provide QoS in a dynamic network environment without adding undue operational complexity and associated costs.
An open, programmable SDN solution is the answer. The key is to implement a programmable hardware approach that allows an SDN control plane access to a hardware data plane that has been tailored to exactly the functionality the control plane requires.
